during Virtual High-Level Roundtable Discussion to Commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons organized by UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa

Dear Colleagues,

Let me start by thanking the UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa for organizing this event.

Eritrea welcomes the convening of this event to commemorate the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. Commemoration are time for reflection and an opportunity to assess how far we have gone in eradicating one of the most heinous crimes of our time. This year there is little cause for celebration as millions continue to fall prey to, and suffer in the hands, of criminals.

The interrelated crimes of migrant smuggling and human trafficking continue to pose serious challenges to human security in the Horn of Africa. Thousands of the citizens of the region, especially youth, are lured by criminal syndicates as they migrate through irregular routes and methods. They face abduction, extortion, rape, enslavement, torture and death. Read more

Asmara, 27 July 2020- At a commemoration event organized in connection with Martyrs Day, nationals in the US contributed over 185 thousand Dollars to augment the Martyrs Trust Fund.According to the Eritrean Embassy in the US, nationals in Las Vegas contributed 21 thousand and 730 Dollars, nationals in Chicago 23 thousand and 760 thousand Dollars, nationals in Seattle 14 thousand Dollars, nationals in Minnesota 10 thousand and 840 Dollars, nationals in Oakland 2 thousand 995 Dollars, nationals in Portland 7 thousand and 200 Dollars, nationals in Huston 941 Dollars, nationals in Denver 14 thousand and 631 Dollars and nationals in Dallas 58 thousand and 400 Dollars to bolster Martyrs Trust Fund and 30 thousand and 720 Dollars in support of 42 families of martyrs. Asmara, 23 July 2020- Contribution by nationals inside the country and abroad to bolster the National Fund to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing.

According to report, St. Joseph kindergarten contributed 6 thousand and 144 Nakfa, St. Gabriel kindergarten 4 thousand and 821 Nakfa, Oreolini kindergarten 3 thousand 494 Nakfa cooperative association of St. Michel 3 thousand Nakfa, Riesi Adi cooperative association in Keren 3 thousand Nakfa, Abune Aregawi cooperative association in Barentu 3 thousand Nakfa. High level Eritrean military delegation delivers message to Sudanese President

Asmara, 21 July 2020- High level Eritrean military delegation headed by Gen. Filipos Woldeyohannes, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Defense Forces, delivered message of President Isaias Afwerki to Gen. Abdul Fattah Al Burhan, President of the Sudan’s Sovereign Council  on 20 July.

At the meeting, Gen. Abdul Fattah Al Burhan expressed appreciation for the close and all-rounded relation that exists between Eritrea and Sudan. Gen. Abdul Fattah said that the visit of the high level delegation of the Eritrean Defense Forces attests to the strong relations between the two countries and thanked Eritrea for its support during Sudan’s challenging transition period.
