UNODC launches new global initiative to boost criminal justice responses to foreign terrorist fighters

Valletta/Horna-Vienna | The growing involvement of individuals as Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF) in various conflicts and terrorist activities has resulted in an increasingly dangerous threat to international peace and security. In response, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has launched a new initiative aimed at bolstering countries’ criminal justice responses to this phenomenon. The initiative, which runs to 2019, will assist Member States in criminalizing the FTF phenomenon, in areas such as terrorist recruitment, incitement to terrorism, terrorism financing, and terrorist training, among others. 58th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs begins with segment on UNGASS preparationsThis CND session brings together around 1,000 delegates representing Member States, inter-governmental organizations, civil society and the media for a global discussion on the world drug problem. This year, the Commission discusses 12 draft resolutions; 65 side events will also be held on the margins of the commission, as well as numerous exhibitions.

UNODC’s work is to protect the health of people; including those suffering from HIV or hepatitis; ensure access to treatment services and essential medicines; promote fundamental human rights; build viable alternative livelihoods and stop criminals from exploiting the vulnerable.
