Statement of H.E. Ambassador Tesfamicael Gerahtu, Head of the Eritrean Delegation to the 35th Session of the Human Rights Council – Geneva, 13 June 2017

Distinguished Delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen

In May last month, the Eritrean people celebrated their 26th Independence Anniversary. The celebrations were held throughout the breadth and length of the country, as well as in the Diaspora, with spectacular public events amid undiminished enthusiasm that has few parallels elsewhere. Asmara’s Liberation and Martyr’s Avenues were thronged with tens of thousands of residents during the Carnival Show on May 22nd and the overnight street party on the eve of Independence Day. Message of President Isaias to UN Security Council

President Isaias Afwerki has sent messages to several Heads of State and Government urging them to use their influences in the UN Security Council to redress the injustices perpetrated against Eritrea.

In his message, President Isaias stressed that the UN Security Council has the obligation, primary responsibility and legal mandate to ensure and promote the security and peace of sovereign countries and thereby guarantee the maintenance of international peace and security. Read more

Asmara, 09 February 2017- The United Nations office in Asmara celebrated March 8, International Women’s Day under the theme “Women in Ensuring Equal Employment Opportunity”.

At the event in which senior government and Front officials as well as resident diplomats took part, Ms. Christine N. Umutoni, Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, presented message of the Secretary General of the UN and underlined that empowering women is the primary alternative for ensuring their rights and development. 123I would like to thank you, Mr. President, for giving my delegation the opportunity to address the Council. Allow me also to congratulate Senegal for assuming the Presidency of the Council for the month of November.

Mr. President, Excellencies,
The UN Security Council has once again committed grave injustice against the people of Eritrea by extending the unjustified sanction.
There is no reason to maintain sanction against Eritrea, as the justification for its imposition has long been proven nonexistent, a fact that has been asserted by the Somalia Eritrea Monitoring Group. In four of its reports, including during its present mandate the Somalia Eritrea Monitoring Group, has affirmed that “there is no evidence of Eritrean support to Al-Shabab in Somalia.” Read more
