Dairy Farm Project at Misilam

By Billion Temesghen | The Eritrean Livestock and Crops Corporation has for long carried out several projects to empower dairy farmers and boost milk production in the country. One of their recent endeavors as part of the Logo-Misilam Development Pilot Project is related to modern dairy farming in Halhale, Southern region.

The project began towards the end of 2017 with 600 livestock of three breeds — Brown Swiss, Holstein and Fleckvieh — imported from Germany. Mr. Kibreab Abraham, manager of the Eritrean Livestock and Crops Corporation, said instead of handing out the imported heifers to farmers, their corporation wanted to first multiply the number of calves by hundreds and then diffuse the breed to dairy farmers in all parts of the country. Asmait Futsumbrhan | During our recent visit to the Northern Red Sea region, we were stunned by the number of date palm trees that are being cultivated in various corners of the region by individual farmers and government institutions. While driving towards the Massawa International Airport, a long line of over 1,500 date palm trees accompanied us on both sides of the road. One of the new recruits of the Eritrean Air Force, Mr. Yohannes, who is a graduate of the Hamelmalo College of Agriculture, was given the task of looking after the date palm trees. He says, “It was my first time to get acquainted with date palm when I first came here. I worked and studied hard to refine my expertise in this particular area”. Read more

Encouraging palm dates farming

Massawa, 19 August 2020- Encouraging palm dates cultivation is being conducted in the sub-zones of Sheib, Ghinda and Massawa sub-zones through integrated effort of stakeholders. The report was made by Mr. Daniel Kesete, head of vegetables and fruits farming development at the Ministry of Agriculture branch in the Northern Red Sea region.

Mr. Daniel indicated that the palm dates cultivated in the areas of Gurgusum, Dogali and other areas in the vicinity are in good condition and have started production to supply the local markets. Read more

Eritrean Poultry Farming Company introduces new machinery

Asmara, 24 November 2012 – Eritrean Poultry Farming Company, a private business located around Mai-Nefhi area, indicated that it has introduced new machinery worth 28 million Nakfa with a view to boosting production.

Mr. Tsehaye Gebreyesus, Manager of the company, said that availability of new incubators would save the company from chick imports, which had visibly impeded it from attaining higher number of poultry. Read more
