Sothern region: Minister holds seminar with community representatives targeting reinforcement of Agriculture sector and food security

Mendefera, 26 June 2013 – The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, held seminar with community representatives from Mendefera, Adi-Quala, Debarwa, Mai-Mine and Emni-Haili sub-zones targeting reinforcement of Agriculture sector and food security.

Mr. Arefaine noted the vitality of integrated efforts in this regard, and pointed out that soil and water conservation is a priority in the process, thus giving rise to visible need for promoting popular undertakings in this connection. He further called on farmers to pay further attention to crop rotation and production of legumes as well as oil crops, in the venture of which the government is expected to launch intervention programs in the future.

Accordingly, the Ministry is working on priority basis as regards raising dairy, vegetable, fruits, poultry and apicultural production capacity, and further focus is necessary in expanding green feed production so as to register still more gratifying dairy output in the Southern region.

The participants of the seminar put forth views regarding several issues, and Mr. Arefaine urged farmers to demonstrate further hard work in their respective ventures.

The Minister is scheduled to conduct a similar seminar with the inhabitants of Dekemhare, Segeneiti, Mai-Aini, Tserona, Senafe and Adi-Keih sub-zones tomorrow.
