Asmara, 25 January 2012 – President Isaias Afwerki returned home today concluding a working visit to Qatar from January 22 to 25.
During his stay, the President held extensive discussion with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, on fostering bilateral relations and regional as well as international issues.
It is to be recalled that President Isaias left for Qatar on Sunday.

Asmara, 17 February 2012 – Vigorous efforts are under way to reduce the illiteracy rate in the country, Mr. Gebrezgi Demam, Director General of Adult Education and Media in the Education Ministry disclosed.
Comparing with previous human resources, he explained that there was no enough education material for illiteracy eradication in the past and indicted that currently enough material is available, and that there is expectation for commendable outcome.
Stating that Illiteracy eradication is the basis for development, Mr. Gebrezgi noted that according to a study conducted in 2008, it has been confirmed that 65% of the Eritrean people could read and write. He further indicated that more efforts would be exerted for reinforcing it.
Mr. Gebrezgi also indicated that conducting special investment for those citizens deprived of education opportunities and creating the opportunity of education for those village administrators from remote areas in order to upgrade their knowledge and develop their administration skills as well as reviving extension programs, are among the future programs of the Department.
Moreover, he noted the role of educated nationals could play in development endeavors and reminded citizens to make good use of the education opportunities thus provided.
February 16, BEIRUT – Preliminary investigations into the jamming of Arabsat satellite transmission shows that it is originating from Ethiopia, Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui said Wednesday, calling on Arabsat’s operator to secure new frequencies for its transmission in Lebanon.
“Arabsat told us that the source of the jamming is Ethiopia and it handed us a copy of their complaint they have passed to Ethiopian authorities on this matter,” said Sehnaoui.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to a local satellite station in Mount Lebanon’s Jouret al-Balout, Sehnaoui said that the political atmosphere in the region is likely to be behind the jamming of certain satellite operators.
“The political atmosphere in the region could push some countries to take such a step and start jamming on some operators,” Sehnaoui said.
Several Lebanese channels and the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera have been jammed in the past year, and the frequencies of Arabsat and Nilesat network providers have been jammed since the pro-democracy uprisings and ensuing unrest in Libya and Egypt.
“There needs to be a permanent solution to this jamming problem,” said Sehnaoui, adding that contacts are ongoing with the administration of Arabsat to assign a new frequency for their transmission in Lebanon.
“Lebanon should be a [safe haven] for the re-broadcasting of satellite networks,” Sehnaoui added.
Sehnaoui, who was accompanied by members of the ministry’s Telecoms Regulatory Authority, said the installation of the fiber optics network in Lebanon would greatly improve the telecoms network in the country.
“The installation of the fiber optics network will end in October, and it will help in the development of this sector,” said Sehnaoui.
But he reiterated the need to cooperate with Arabsat and Nilesat in providing new frequencies to re-broadcast their channels. “Satellite networks should take the initiative to ensure new frequencies for the Lebanese channels because the jamming might be related to the political problems the region is going through.”

by Julie Lévesque | A new study by the Mediterranean Council for Intelligence Studies’ (MCIS) 2012 Intelligence Studies Yearbook points to the use of social media as “the new cutting edge in open-source tactical intelligence collection”. IntelNews.org’s Joseph Fitsanakis, who co-authored the study, reports:
“We explain that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and a host of other social networking platforms are increasingly viewed by intelligence agencies as invaluable channels of information acquisition. What the study fails to mention, however, is the use of social media by intelligence agencies for other purposes. The study leads us to believe that social media is solely an intelligence gathering tool, when in fact, a number of reports have shown that it is used for propaganda including the creation of fake identities in support of covert operations. Those practices are discussed in Army of Fake Social Media Friends to Promote Propaganda, Social Media: Air Force ordered software to manage army of Fake Virtual People and Pentagon Seeks to Manipulate Social Media for Propaganda Purposes, published on Global Research in 2011.
The MCIS study is partly based on the “Arab Spring” framework which allegedly “prompted the US government to begin developing guidelines for culling intelligence from social media networks”. (Ibid.)
Again, this leaves out the fact that the U.S. Government provides “activist training” to foreign nationals to destabilize their country of origin. This tactic is detailed in Tony Cartalucci’s latest article, Egypt: US-funded Agitators on Trial: US “Democracy Promotion” = Foreign-funded Sedition.
“Cyber dissidence” is sponsored among others by CIA-linked Freedom House. The First of The Bush Institute’s Human Freedom Events, Co-Sponsored by Freedom House was titled “The Conference on Cyber Dissidents: Global Successes and Challenges”.
The Conference on Cyber Dissidents highlighted the work, methods, courage and achievements of its eight dissident guest speakers, from seven nations. Five of these nations are places where freedom has been extinguished (all rated “not free” by Freedom House): China, Cuba, Iran, Syria, and Russia. Two others are places where freedom is in peril (both rated “partly free” by Freedom House) because of an authoritarian government accumulating more power, as in Venezuela, or because of the threat of internal terrorist groups, as in Colombia. Countries where “freedom has been extinguished” and which are U.S. allies, such as Bahrain or Saudi Arabia, are not listed above. The only U.S. ally listed is Colombia and its freedom is said to be threatened by terrorist groups, rather than by its governement. It is worth noting that the Colombian government has been accused of spying on its journalists and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) says freedom of expression ‘barely exists’ in Colombia.
The goal of “activist training” by U.S. NGOs is to destabilize America’s political enemies in the name of freedom. “Cyber dissidence” is in turn used by intelligence agencies for covert operations.
