Asmara, 10 January 2014 – The Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Mr. Tesfai Gebresilasie, said that the nation’s natural resource management policy is anchored on futurity of generations and equitability. The Official made the remark today at a seminar with community representatives from all over the Central region, during which he stressed the need to adhere to sound strategies of natural resource management with a view to improving societal livelihood and safeguarding rights of future generations in this connection.

Mr. Tesfai further indicated that the Government’s development strategies aim at ensuring sustainable economic growth, and that industrial as well as other projects set for implementation in the country are scrutinized adequately as regards their socio-economic merits and environmental impact. He further outlined the quandaries such as illicit land sale that had impeded distribution of land plots, and stated that the necessary administrative measures have already been taken to this end.

Accordingly, the fact that Eritrea is located in a semi-arid geographical setting entails a need for more cautious water management, and thus imprudent and accountability-lacking digging of water wells involves endangerment of underground water resource. Moreover, gratifying accomplishment has been registered nationwide pertaining to outreach of potable water supply facilities and that the number of such facilities has grown three-fold, and stepped-up efforts would be put up in the future, the Minister elaborated.

In closing remarks, Mr. Tesfai disclosed that various initiatives have been taken in a bid to promote environmental stability, and that the government would continue perusing sound policies targeting equitable access, social justice and societal responsibility.

The participants of the meeting put forth views focusing on several issues.
