Italy’s Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Michele Valensise Meets Eritrea’s Ambassador in Relation to the Lampedusa Victims

Italy’s Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Michele Valensise Meets Eritrea’s Ambassador in Relation to the Lampedusa Victims(ASCA) – Rome, 16 Oct – The Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Michele Valensise, received today the Ambassador of Eritrea, Tekle Zemede, in relation to the tragic shipwreck in Lampedusa on 3 October. The ambassador Valensise explained the status of pending proceedings for days for the recognition of deceased made particularly complex by the circumstances of the events.

The Secretary-General recalled the actions taken by the authorities ‘premises, including the transfer, for health reasons, of remains and their burial in different locations’. 

He confirmed the will ‘Italian to continue the work for the recognition of bodies and to respect the wishes of the first families of the victims about the final destination of the spoils. He also pointed out the ongoing investigation by the judiciary and related restrictions.

Tekle The ambassador thanked the Italian government for its efforts and reiterated the desire of the authorities’ Eritrean able – in accordance with regulations and procedures Italian – welcome in their country the remains of victims identified.
