Ethiopian embassy in Somaliland is suspected of human trafficking

Ethiopian embassy in Somaliland is suspected of human traffickingLast week, on the outskirts of the Ethiopia-Somaliland border town of Wajale, Somaliland police officers Hussein Dahir and Abdirashid Mohamed Mahmoud sustained bullet inflicted injuries on the knee and thigh respectively after Ethiopian border guards opened fire on them. The Somaliland officers were in pursuit of smugglers and human traffickers.

While this is the first incidence of its nature to ensue between security forces of the two neighboring countries, cross border smuggling of illicit drugs and Human cargo from Ethiopia to Somaliland is on the rise.

Almost every week the Somaliland police force is reporting arrest of drugs smugglers and their illicit cargo, prompting some news organizations to suspect the possibility of involvement by the Ethiopian Embassy personnel in Hargeisa.

This accusation was refuted by Gen Tesfaye Berhe, Ethiopian ambassador in Somaliland, who upon informing that they were in the country to enhance bi-lateral relations, asked the government to investigate the issue, which the Ambassador claimed was as a result of propaganda by enemies of the two countries.
