Central region: Religious leaders reiterate readiness to step up participation in reforestation programs

Asmara, 23 June 2011 – Religious leaders reiterated readiness to step up participation in reforestation programs scheduled to be undertaken this year in 84 villages of the Central region.

They expressed such readiness during an inspection tour of Mr. Kahsai Gebrihiwet, Administrator of Central regions, in Serejeka sub-zone of reforestation activities carried out by EDF members, the general public and organizations.

Mr. Kahsai pointed out that climate change, soil erosion and water inadequacy are some of the negative consequences of deforestation, and called on religious leaders to enhance their participation in the reforestation program.

The religious leaders on their part called for the designation of a specific place on which to carry out reforestation activities, on top of the reforestation programs implemented in the compounds of churches and mosques.

The regional Administrator said that that over 4.5 million different tree seedlings are being made ready for plantation by public, EDF members and students in this year’s rainy season.
