Remarks by Ms. Elsa Haile, Director International Organization, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea

during Virtual High-Level Roundtable Discussion to Commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons organized by UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa

Dear Colleagues,

Let me start by thanking the UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa for organizing this event.

Eritrea welcomes the convening of this event to commemorate the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. Commemoration are time for reflection and an opportunity to assess how far we have gone in eradicating one of the most heinous crimes of our time. This year there is little cause for celebration as millions continue to fall prey to, and suffer in the hands, of criminals.

The interrelated crimes of migrant smuggling and human trafficking continue to pose serious challenges to human security in the Horn of Africa. Thousands of the citizens of the region, especially youth, are lured by criminal syndicates as they migrate through irregular routes and methods. They face abduction, extortion, rape, enslavement, torture and death. Read more

Contribution to augment National and Martyrs Trust Funds

Asmara, 13 July 2020- Nationals in the Scandinavian countries contributed over 260 thousand Kroner to augment the National Fund to contain the spread of corona virus and Martyrs Trust Fund.

According to the Eritrean Embassy in the Scandinavian countries, ‘Eri Tsinat’ Pal Talk Forum contributed 81 thousand Kroner in the name of the late Awelker Seid, former editor and coordinator of the forum, the National Holidays Coordinating Committee in the Scandinavian countries 50 thousand and 100 Kroner in the name of the late Berhane Tilahun, former cahier of the committee,  residents of Ockelbo 6 thousand Kroner, national committee in Denmark 7 thousand Kroner and one national contributed 6 thousand Kroner. President Isaias returned home concluding working visit to Egypt

Asmara, 07 July 2020- President Isaias Afwerki returned home today, 6 July, in the afternoon hours concluding three day working visit to Egypt.

President Isaias Afwerki and President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt met and held extensive discussion at Al-Ittihadia Palace in Cairo focusing on bilateral relations and regional developments of interest to the two countries.

The Presidential delegation included, Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab.

President Isaias held talks with President Al Sisi

Asmara, 06 July 2020- President Isaias Afwerki in the afternoon hours of today, 6 July, met and held talks with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt at Al-Ittihadia Palace in Cairo. The two leaders held frank and extensive discussions on bilateral relations and regional developments.

The two sides agreed to promote comprehensive bilateral cooperation. As regards regional development, the two leaders recognized that challenges and tensions are casting their shadow over vast opportunities which remain untapped, despite their undisputed benefits for all countries. Read more

President Isaias Afwerki on working visit to Egypt

Asmara, 05 July 2020- President Isaias Afwerki departed to Egypt in the morning hours of today, 5 July, for a three-day working visit. During his stay in Egypt, President Isaias will discuss with President Abdel Fatah Al Sisi and other Egyptian officials on bilateral and regional issues of interest to the two countries.

On arrival at Cairo International Airport President Isaias was accorded warm welcome by senior Egyptian officials.The Presidential delegation includes, Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab. It is to be recalled that President Isaias in recent weeks conducted similar visits to Ethiopia and Sudan.
