Giving a Boost to Date Palm Farming

Asmait Futsumbrhan | During our recent visit to the Northern Red Sea region, we were stunned by the number of date palm trees that are being cultivated in various corners of the region by individual farmers and government institutions. While driving towards the Massawa International Airport, a long line of over 1,500 date palm trees accompanied us on both sides of the road. One of the new recruits of the Eritrean Air Force, Mr. Yohannes, who is a graduate of the Hamelmalo College of Agriculture, was given the task of looking after the date palm trees. He says, “It was my first time to get acquainted with date palm when I first came here. I worked and studied hard to refine my expertise in this particular area”. Read more

Asmara, 23 August 2020- The Eritrean community festival in the US that was held from 15 to 22 August under the theme “resilience and Progress” concluded with patriotic zeal.The festival that was officially opened in Seattle and went for seven days in various cities in the US was virtually conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival was featured by more than 32 programs including seminars regarding ‘Geo-Political Situation in the Horn of Africa’, ‘Eritrea’s Role in the Horn of Africa’ ‘National Development Strategy of Eritrea’ ‘All Rounded Effort to Combat COVID-19 Pandemic’, ‘Nurturing the Youth with Eritrean Noble Values”, “Importance and Progress of Public Diplomacy’, ‘Objective Situation in the Homeland’, ‘Recollection of Festivals in the Past 40 Years’ and others. Asmara, 23 August 2020- According to report from the Ministry of Health, nationals inside the country contributed over 200 thousand Nakfa to bolster the National Fund to combat COVID-19 pandemic.

Accordingly, the regional Assembly of Southern region contributed 64 thousand and 924 Nakfa, Fenkil Garage in Merhano 28 thousand and 42 Nakfa, Awli’e Tsoru development committee 15 thousand Nakfa, and other small scale businesses, cooperative associations and individuals contributed a total of 47 thousand and 793 Nakfa. Asmara, 21 August 2020- In 16 sub-zones in the Central region extensive community based forestation program is being held in cooperation of the residents, members of the Defense Forces and institutions.

Indicating that over one million tree seedlings are prepared by the nine nurseries in the region, Mr. Abraham Teklu, representative of the Forestry and Wild Life Authority, said that already 500 thousand tree seedlings have been planted. Read more

Massawa, 19 August 2020- Encouraging palm dates cultivation is being conducted in the sub-zones of Sheib, Ghinda and Massawa sub-zones through integrated effort of stakeholders. The report was made by Mr. Daniel Kesete, head of vegetables and fruits farming development at the Ministry of Agriculture branch in the Northern Red Sea region.

Mr. Daniel indicated that the palm dates cultivated in the areas of Gurgusum, Dogali and other areas in the vicinity are in good condition and have started production to supply the local markets. Read more
