Eritrean Embassy in South Sudan evacuates nationals from warzones in collaboration with the UNAsmara, 30 December 2013 – The Eritrean Embassy in the Republic of South Sudan has evacuated nationals from warzones, especially Bentieyu and Bor cities, to Juba in collaboration with the United Nations.

The 217 Eritrean nationals, 20 of whom comprising mothers and children, had sought asylum in the compound of the UN office after they were displaced following the outburst of fighting in the country that posed peril on their lives. Currently, they are being taken care in the capital, according to reports.

Metro DC Eritreans Standing Strong as Oneby Amanuel Biedemariam | Eritreans in the Metro DC area gathered in Washington Marriott on the 8th of December for Mekete Meeting that Eritreans hold regularly all around the globe. What made this gathering unique however, was the fact that the weather was terrible. The region was hit with rain, sleet, freezing-rain, snow and windy-cold weather prompting for major alerts and street closings. Undeterred by the bad weather however, Eritreans gathered to express support for their government, show unity and to get updates on current developments. ‘No Intelligence, Real or Fabricated, Since 2009’

“In view of the absence of any intelligence, real or fabricated, linking Eritrea with Shabaab for over four years, the UN Security Council should terminate sanctions imposed in 2009 by UNSC resolution 1907.”

These are the words of a prominent member of the American foreign policy establishment.  In an article published on a, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Herman Cohen said that “all available intelligence indicates that Eritrea has not had any contact [with Somali insurgents] since 2009.” Adding, he said, “Earlier intelligence reports, denied by Eritrea as fabricated, indicated that the country was facilitating the transfer of funds to Shabaab – nothing of that sort has been reported since 2009 by any source.  Those of us who know Eritrea well understand that the Eritrean leadership fears Islamic militancy as much as any other country in the Horn of Africa region.” Read more

Eritrean nationals residing in South Sudan reminded to take necessary precaution until the conflict calms

Asmara, 22 December 2013- Mr. Girmai Gebremariam, Eritrean Ambassador to South Sudan, reminded Eritrean nationals residing in that country to take necessary precaution until the conflict taking place calms.

At a meeting he conducted on 21 December with representatives of Eritrean community members in Juba and its surroundings the Ambassador explained that the conflict has been stretched from Juba and its surroundings to Jonglei and Unity regions, and that properties have been ransacked including that of Eritreans.

He further reminded all citizens to serious follow up the developments in that country, and that the Embassy would provide timely information on the situation.
